Marker-Passing over Microfeatures: Towards a Hybrid Symbolic/Connectionist Model
نویسنده
چکیده
Spreading activation, in the farm of computer models and cognitive theories, has recently been undergoing a resurgence of interest in the cognitive science and Al communities. Two different types of cognitive models have been proposed to explain the activation spreading results. One approach, that of marker-passing, concentrates on the spreading of symbolic information through an associative knowledge representation. The other technique, including the work in local con-necttonism, has focused on the passage of numeric information through a network. In this article, it is shown that these two techniques con be merged. The implementation of a mechanism in which a local-connectionist-like model is integrated with a symbolic marker-passer is described and shows that the combined system is more powerful than either of the separate models alone. Finally, some early steps toward a hybrid model in which a distributed network is used to learn the micrafeatures is described.

Marker-Passing and Microfeatures
The cognitive modeling community is presently divided between two different approaches to the spread of activation through networks. One school holds that symbolic information must be progagated, the other that numeric weights are used and activation spreads in a more analog manner. In this paper we describe a mechanism which allows the two processes to be merged via the introduction into the s...
متن کاملProcessing Symbols at Variable Speed in DUAL: Connectionist Activation as Power Supply
This article explores the advantages and one potential implementation of a new style of computation in which multiple lines of symbolic processing are pursued at different speeds within a hybrid multi-agent system. The cognitive architecture DUAL consists of small hybrid computational entities called DUAL agents. Each agent has a symbolic processor capable of simple symbol manipulations. There ...
متن کاملA Microfeature Based Approach Towards Metaphor Interpretation
This paper advocates a microfeature based approach towards developing computationalmodels for metaphor interpretation. It is argued that the existing models based on semantic networks and mappings of complex symbolic structures are insu cient and inappropriate for modeling metaphors. A connectionist model of metaphor interpretation based on microfeatures is presented, which tries to take into a...
متن کاملHybrid Connectionist-Symbolic Modules: A Report from the IJCAI-95 Workshop on Connectionist-Symbolic Integration
need for such models has been growing slowly but steadily over the past five years. Some new, important approaches have been proposed and developed, some of which were presented at the workshop. In sum, the participants felt that it was definitely worthwhile to further pursue research in this area because it might generate important new ideas and significant new applications in the near future....
متن کاملSpoken Language Processing in the Hybrid Connectionist Architecture SCREEN
In this paper1 we describe a robust, learning approach to spoken language understanding. Since interactively spoken and computationally analyzed language often contains many errors, robust connectionist networks are used for providing a at screening analysis. A screening analysis is a shallow at analysis based on category sequences at various syntactic, semantic and dialog levels. Rather than u...
